The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce the first weekly award winners of the 2011 season. The awards are based on games played between June 9 and June 19.
Elmira's David Bishop (Mississippi State) has been selected as the first PGCBL Player of the Week. Nick Gonzalez (pictured, South Florida) and Neil Fryer (Siena), both of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, are the co-recipients of the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week award.
David Bishop appeared in seven of Elmira's eight games and batted .375 (9-for-24) with three home runs and six RBI. He scored seven runs, smashed three doubles and tallied an .875 slugging percentage as well as a .464 on-base percentage. The Elmira designated hitter leads the PGCBL in home runs, slugging percentage and total bases (21). He is tied for third in overall batting average as well. Bishop has posted two multi-hit, two multi-run and two multi-RBI games as well as one multi-home run game.
The Mobile, Ala., native scored three runs in Elmira's season opener against Cooperstown on Thurs., June 9. He went 1-for-2 with three runs, two walks and one RBI. Bishop belted two solo home runs against the Glens Falls Golden Eagles at spacious East Field on Wed., June 15. He drilled his league-leading third home run on Sat., June 18, in the night cap of a home doubleheader with the Newark Pilots. The Elmira masher finished the twin bill with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI.
The Glens Falls Golden Eagles have yet to lose a game when Nick Gonzalez or Neil Fryer has been the starting pitcher. Gonzalez has not recorded a decision however he has a 1.80 earned run average and 15 strikeouts in 10.0 innings pitched. The University of South Florida rising sophomore has limited opponents to three hits and a .100 batting average. Heading into Tues., June 21, Nick leads the PGCBL in total strikeouts. On Fri., June 10, Gonzalez pitched a no-hit shutout against the Amsterdam Mohawks over five innings and struck out 11. He fanned 11 of 16 men he faced in what became a 4-3 victory for the Golden Eagles. The Tampa, Fla., native returned to the mound against the Albany Dutchmen on Fri., June 17. He pitched five innings and yielded two runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
Fryer has earned victories in each of his first two starts and is 2-0 with a 1.64 earned run average. He has seven strikeouts in 11.0 innings pitched and has given up seven hits. Opponents against Fryer have compiled a .179 batting average. The rising sophomore at Siena College pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out seven batters on Sun., June 12, at home against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. Fryer fanned five of the first seven hitters he opposed. The Greenwich, N.Y., native allowed two runs on four hits over six innings against the Amsterdam Mohawks on Sat., June 18. He carried a no-hitter for four and one-third innings and retired 17 of the first 21 batters he faced.
