Long, Strange Night in Amsterdam Suspended After Nine Innings

Filed by the Amsterdam Mohawks...

A long evening of baseball between the Amsterdam Mohawks and Albany Dutchmen  began with a torrential downpour at 6:40 that delayed the scheduled 7:05 game for field repair. The game finally got started at 8:14. Some three-and-a-half hours and many many base-runners later at 11:42, the rain returned in a 4-4 tie in the tenth inning. This time there would be no resumption. The game was suspended at that point on the decision of the umpires due to wet field conditions.

While fans waited to see if the game would be continued after the quick shower, the lights at Shuttleworth Park were turned off and the planned post-game fireworks show was used in the almost-midnight rain-delay instead. The largest crowd of the season, 2142, was on-hand for the game and the vast majority of the turnout had incredibly stuck it out the whole way through hoping to see the fireworks as well as the game's conclusion.

All fans who stayed until the end were given a voucher for a future home game as a token of thanks for their tremendous loyalty on this very long evening.

The game will be resumed on Thursday, July 11 at Shuttleworth Park when Albany next visits to take on the Mohawks. Game-time of the resumption of the suspended game will likely be at 6:00 and will pick up in the 10th inning of a 4-4 tie. A full nine-inning game will follow at 7:05.

Bradley Noland (N. Alabama) socked a two-run homer in the first inning off Amsterdam starter Trey Wingenter (Auburn) to stake the Dutchmen to the initial lead. Noland added an RBI single in the fourth inning as well.

Amsterdam battled back and eventually tied it in the sixth on a two-run double to deep-center by John Sansone (Florida State). Brian Ruby (Binghamton) scored three runs going 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Mohawks were on their seventh pitcher of the night, Mike Urbanski (Binghamton), when play was suspended with the sudden downpour. Urbanski had completed his warmup tosses and was about to throw the first pitch of extra frames when the rain suddenly got even harder still and the umpires were forced to impose a delay.

The game featured lots of chances, some big defensive plays and spectacular catches, and all-around very exciting baseball from two hard-working and hungry teams. Albany outhit Amsterdam 13-11. The Dutchmen left 12 runners on base while Amsterdam stranded 10.

Amsterdam travels to the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs Saturday at 7:00 with left-handed Dylan Dwyer (Kentucky) scheduled to start. The Mohawks then make their way over to the Watertown Rams Sunday at 5:00. Amsterdam's next home game at Shuttleworth Park is Tuesday night against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes.

The Dutchmen are home on Saturday night hosting the Adirondack Trail Blazers at Bob Belizzi Field.
