The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs returned home on Sunday to Veteran’s Memorial Park for its Perfect Game Collegiate League (PGCBL) matchup against the Amsterdam Mohawks riding a three game winning streak while the Mohawks came in with a two game losing streak. Rain came down on Vet’s Park prior to the start of the game which resulting in a late start after the ground crews did their magic to get the field game ready. When rains came again after five innings of play the game was called and Amsterdam picked up the 7-3 win.
The Amsterdam Mohawks wasted no time getting on the board when Kyle Barrett (Kentucky) singled and John Sansone (Florida State) was hit by a pitch and John Nogowski (Florida State) reached on an error and the designated hitter Dylan Smith (Auburn) knocked in two runs on a single to take a 2-0 lead. Amsterdam struck again in the top of the third when Kyle Barrett (Kentucky) singled and was then caught stealing, Nogowski walked and Jordan Ebert (Auburn) singled as did Dylan Smith who gave the Mohawks a 3-1 advantage. Ed Charlton (NJIT) was up next and reached on an error with another run scoring and the Mohawks led 4-1. The Mohawks then broke the game open when Shane Zimmer (Canisius) blasted a 3-run homerun to give Amsterdam a commanding 7-1 lead.
Mohawk Valley picked up another run in the fourth when Mike Fischer (Columbia) singled and was thrown out at second but not before a run scored and the inning ended with the Dawgs down 7-2. In the bottom half of the fifth the DiamondDawgs scored again after Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) singled and Daulton Harrington (ULM) walked and both runners attempted a double steal in which the Mohawk’s catcher Mark Brennan (Marist) threw to third which got past the third baseman resulting in a run and the Dawgs cutting the lead to 7-2.
In the loss Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) was 2-for-3 with a triple, Jordan Friend (Alabama A&M) was 2-for-2 and Mike Fischer (Columbia) went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jared Dye (University of Louisiana Monroe) went 5 innings in the loss giving up 8 hits and 2 strikes.
The win for Amsterdam went to Dylan Dwyer (Kentucky) who pitched the full five innings, giving up 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. Kyle Barrett (Kentucky) was 2-for-3, Dylan Smith (Auburn) was 3-for-3 with a double, Shane Zimmer was 1-for-3 with a 3-run homerun and John Sansone (Florida State) and Jordan Ebert (Auburn) both had singles.
The DiamondDawgs are back at Veterans Memorial Park Tuesday, July 2, 2013 for a 7:05pm contest against the Utica Brewers.
