Pitching carries Albany Dutchmen past Newark Pilots

NEWARK N.Y. -- The Newark Pilots (8-10) fell to the Eastern Division-leading Albany Dutchmen (11-5), 6-2, on a free admission Friday night at Colburn Park.

Albany took the lead early in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Joe Purritano (Dartmouth). The Dutchmen increased their advantage to 3-0 with two more runs in the top of the fourth. Tyler Orris (Millersville) scored on a wild pitch and Chris Susek (Coastal Carolina) brought in the second run of the inning on a RBI single to center field.

The Pilots, trailing 4-0, mounted a brief comeback in the seventh as Scott Matthews (Washington, Md.) plated Taylor Hinshaw on a ground out to the right side. Hinshaw and Jacob Russell (Kentucky) were the team leaders for Newark in hits while Anthony Marks (Coastal Carolina) of the Dutchmen went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Albany's Brian Ruhm (UC Davis) added a home run in the top of the sixth.

Pilots southphaw starter Justin D’Amato (St. John Fisher) pitched four innings D'Amato (1-1) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out six.

Taylor Hinshaw (Georgia College) broke out of a slump by going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. Jacob Russell (Kentucky) continued his hot streak at the plate with two hits overall and one RBI.

Albany starting pitcher Sean Spicer (Baylor) held off the Pilots during five shutout innings of work. Spicer (2-0) limited Newark to four hits; he walked four and struck out four. Dylan Collett (Keene State) replaced Spicer and struck out five over 3.1 innings of middle relief. Jose Hernandez (Dean) recorded the final two outs of the game.

Duffy Fairgrounds beginning at 5:00 p.m. The nationally-ranked Albany Dutchmen next play on Saturday night at rival Glens Falls.
