Red Wings Sweep Doubleheader

The Geneva Red Wings played a doubleheader against the Newark Pilots on Wednesday. The first game was a makeup of the Wings’ home opener on June 1 that was canceled due to rain.

Game 1: Geneva 8 Newark 5

The first game picked up in the bottom half of the 2nd inning with the score 4-1 Red Wings.

Geneva expanded their lead in the 5th when Noah Fisher hit an RBI single. During the next at-bat, Brainy Rojas would score on a wild pitch. Fisher would then score from another wild pitch, to make it 7-1 Geneva.

Newark would answer back next inning, as David Bermudez hit a two-RBI double to cut the lead down to four. An RBI single by Ty Syta in the top half of the 7th made it a 7-4 game.

A sacrifice fly by Brandon Cooper added an insurance run for the Wings.

In the top of the 9th, a solo home run by Logan Stirr started a rally Newark. Although, it would fall just short as Geneva would close it out for the win.

Game 2: Geneva 5 Newark 4

Game two was only a seven-inning game due to the doubleheader.

Newark opened the scoring in the top of the third when Allen Murphy hit an RBI-double. The very next at-bat, Over Torres, blasted a two-run home run to give Newark a 3-0 lead.

Newark’s starting pitcher Ryan Mueller had a great outing, as he kept the Wings scoreless for the first four innings.

Geneva got on the board in the 5th as Brainy Rojas scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the 7th, Allen Murphy grounded out but still managed to knock in a run for Newark, making it 4-1.

In the bottom half of the inning, Geneva rallied back. It started with a base hit by Thursal White that, after an error by Newark’s shortstop David Bermudez, scored Trey Younger and Brandon Cooper. White then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at four.

Alex Bibb then came through for Geneva with a walk-off single, as the Wings won 5-4.
