Week 7 PGCBL Pitcher of the Week: Scott Whitehead (Canisius), Watertown

Scott Whitehead pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout against the nationally-ranked Amsterdam Mohawks on July 28 at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. Amsterdam entered the game with the league’s leading team batting average. Whitehead scattered four singles, walked none and struck out five in a 108-pitch masterpiece. He retired 27 of the 32 batters he faced and set down 14-straight Mohawks between the first and fifth innings. The Tonawanda, N.Y., native allowed just two Amsterdam runners to safely advance past first base.

Whitehead’s complete game shutout was just the second nine-inning shutout in the PGCBL this summer. Elmira’s Jordan Carter (Saint Joseph’s, Pa.) blanked the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs on June 27 with a five-hit shutout at Dunn Field.

Through 10 overall appearances, the rising junior is 3-2 with a 2.81 earned run average. Whitehead leads the Wizards in innings pitched (57.2), complete games (two) and winning percentage (.600).


          

Week 6 PGCBL Co-Pitchers of the Week: Selby Brummett (Paradise Valley CC), Mohawk Valley; Chris Kono (Holy Cross), Cooperstown

Selby Brummett and Chris Kono took the mound at Vet’s Park on a 90-degree night in Little Falls. Selby Brummett, a PGCBL all-star, pitched a two-hitter over eight innings. He allowed one unearned run, walked none and struck out eight. Brummett carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and retired 11 of the first 12 Cooperstown batters he faced. The Salem, Utah, native kept the first-place Hawkeyes off of the scoreboard in seven of his eight innings. The 6-foot-4 hurler opposed five men over the minimum and induced 13 ground outs.

Chris Kono scattered six hits over eight innings. He gave up one unearned run in the first and then responded with seven scoreless innings in a row. Kono walked one, struck out two and he induced 12 ground outs. The Greenwich, Conn., native allowed only two Mohawk Valley runners to advance safely past second base and just four DiamondDawgs were able to reach second. The 6-foot-5 Hawkeye opposed just six batters over the minimum; he pitched to one man in the ninth.





Week 5 PGCBL Pitcher of the Week: Carson Beauchaine (Saginaw Valley State), Newark

Carson Beauchaine pitched a combined 13.0 innings in two starts for the Newark Pilots last week. He did not allow a hit in 10 of those frames. Beauchaine went 1-1 with a 0.69 earned run average. He allowed one earned run on three hits, walked four and struck out 17. Opponents against the Newark starter mustered a .075 batting average.

The Fraser, Mich., native was masterful on Sunday against division-rival Elmira at Newark’s Colburn Park. Beauchaine tossed a two-hit shutout over eight innings, walked one and struck out 11. He was nearly perfect through six with a two-out walk in the third being his only blemish. Beauchaine no-hit the Pioneers for six and two-thirds innings. He did not allow a runner to advance past safely past first base and retired 24 of the 27 batters he faced. The 11-strikeout performance was Beauchaine’s third of the season. Earlier in the week against red-hot Albany, Beauchaine gave up one hit over five innings, walked one and struck out six. He no-hit the Dutchmen through the first four innings and then yielded two scores (one earned) in the fifth.

Heading into the All-Star Break, Beauchaine is 2-1 with a 2.05 earned run average over seven starts. He leads the league with 51 strikeouts in 44.0 innings pitched. 


        

Week 4 PGCBL Co-Pitchers of the Week: Dominick Ruscitti (Kutztown), Newark; Steven Poche (SE Louisiana), Albany

Dominick Ruscitti hurled a complete game four-hitter in a 2-1 home victory over nationally-ranked Glens Falls on Fri., July 8. Ruscitti held the Golden Eagles to four singles, walked one and struck out six. He retired 18 of the final 20 batters he faced and did not allow a hit after the third inning. Between the third and eighth frames, the Newark starter set down 14 Golden Eagles in a row. The Kutztown University rising senior leads the PGCBL with a 1.11 earned run average over five appearances. Ruscitti has given up only four earned runs in 32.1 innings and he is 3-0.

Steven Poche pitched a complete game  four-hit shutout against the Elmira Pioneers on Wed., July 6, at Dunn Field. The Pioneers entered the game with a .303 team batting average. Poche scattered four hits, walked none and struck out seven in a rain-shortened contest that was called after seven innings. He allowed only two Elmira runners to advance safely to second base and faced three batters over the minimum. Through four starts, Poche has a 2.95 earned run average and 19 strikeouts in 21.1 innings pitched.



Week 3 PGCBL Pitcher of the Week: Jordan Carter (Saint Joseph's, Pa.), Elmira

Jordan Carter bookended the week for the PGCBL West leading Pioneers with a pair of victories. Carter went 2-0 with a 2.12 earned run average in 17.0 innings pitched. He struck out 17, walked two and limited opponents to a .221 batting average. The Collegeville, Pa., native tossed the first complete game shutout in PGCBL history on Mon., June 27, against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out six in the nine-inning affair. Carter allowed just two runners to advance safely past second base. The Elmira hurler sat down 21 of the final 25 men he faced. The Saint Joseph’s (Pa.) product followed up his complete game effort with an 11-strikeout performance over eight innings versus division-rival Newark on Sat., July 2. Overall this season, Carter is 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA. He has 21 strikeouts in 26.0 innings pitched. The right-handed hurler is the fourth Elmira player to receive a weekly accolade from the PGCBL this season.

 Week 2 PGCBL Pitcher of the Week: Derek Mazzio (Saint Louis), Glens Falls

Derek Mazzio is the third Golden Eagle to receive a weekly honor from the PGCBL. Starting pitchers Nick Gonzalez (South Florida) and Neil Fryer (Siena), both of Glens Falls, were the Co-Pitchers of the Week for Week 1. Mazzio started twice for the nationally-ranked Glens Falls Golden Eagles in the span of five days. He posted a 1.69 earned run average over the two starts however he did not record a decision. The right-handed pitcher struck out 14 batters in 10.2 innings and held opponents to a .229 batting average. Mazzio was the only starting pitcher in the PGCBL to make two starts last week. The Saint Louis University rising sophomore took the East Field mound against Cooperstown on Tues., June 21. He yielded one run on three hits over five and one-third innings and struck out seven. Mazzio retired 16 of the 21 batters he faced and allowed Cooperstown only five base runners. The St. Louis, Mo., native returned to the mound on Sun., June 26. He scattered six hits over five innings, allowed one run and struck out seven against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs, the second-place team in the PGCBL East. Mazzio forced Mohawk Valley to strand seven runners on base and he recorded three-straight outs in his final frame after the first three batters of the inning reached base. Through Sunday's games, Mazzio is first in the league in strikeouts (26) and sixth in earned run average (1.47).

 

        

 Week 1 PGCBL Co-Pitchers of the Week: Nick Gonzalez (South Florida), Glens Falls; Neil Fryer (Siena), Glens Falls

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles have yet to lose a game when Nick Gonzalez or Neil Fryer has been the starting pitcher. Gonzalez has not recorded a decision however he has a 1.80 earned run average and 15 strikeouts in 10.0 innings pitched. The University of South Florida rising sophomore has limited opponents to three hits and a .100 batting average. Heading into Tues., June 21, Nick leads the PGCBL in total strikeouts. On Fri., June 10, Gonzalez pitched a no-hit shutout against the Amsterdam Mohawks over five innings and struck out 11. He fanned 11 of 16 men he faced in what became a 4-3 victory for the Golden Eagles. The Tampa, Fla., native returned to the mound against the Albany Dutchmen on Fri., June 17. He pitched five innings and yielded two runs on three hits with four strikeouts.

Fryer has earned victories in each of his first two starts and is 2-0 with a 1.64 earned run average. He has seven strikeouts in 11.0 innings pitched and has given up seven hits. Opponents against Fryer have compiled a .179 batting average. The rising sophomore at Siena College pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out seven batters on Sun., June 12, at home against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. Fryer fanned five of the first seven hitters he opposed. The Greenwich, N.Y., native allowed two runs on four hits over six innings against the Amsterdam Mohawks on Sat., June 18. He carried a no-hitter for four and one-third innings and retired 17 of the first 21 batters he faced.
